Toxic Crusaders (, 1992)™ and ©1992 Troma, Inc.Troma specializes in turning out tacky, lighthearted, and utterly preposterous films—many of which have gone on to become cult classics. The Toxic Avenger, was one such masterpiece.
It starred a hapless janitor who managed to dunk himself in a can of toxic waste, immediately turning green, ugly, and super-powerful. Now, he’s out to clean up pollution, starting with the fiends who have been spreading toxic waste all around the place. That original film spawned its own comic series, Toxic Avenger, and an even more unlikely cartoon spinoff, Toxic Crusaders, which in turn inspired this series. For Toxic Crusaders, old Toxie is joined by a crew of similarly bizarre toxic heroes which includes Major Disaster, Nozone, Headbanger, and Junkyard (a half hobo/half junkyard dog hybrid).
Like the film, the comic gets chuckles by smirking at its own implausibility and silliness. And, like Troma’s films, it works more often than not.
